Can Maintenance Really Be Called A Ministry?
Ministry CAN happen as a result of maintenance. It can happen when we make the church facility so appealing and comfortable that it makes an impact on visitors, forming a positive first impression of Rainier View Christian Church and softening them towards the message of Jesus. Ministry also happens when people come together to serve the church, fixing broken stuff, and end up filling the gaps in each other’s lives while they work.
What Does The Maintenance Ministry Look Like?
Though the work is overseen by the RVCC Church Administrator, and directed by a volunteer Maintenance Ministry Coordinator, the actual work is carried out by volunteers who come together as often as they want. These volunteers fall into several different groupings:
- Most of our volunteers simply let us know that they are available occasionally, and if they have an interest in a certain kind of work. We call them on an as-needed basis, when we have a job for their special skill or interest. In this way we can develop a large pool of helpers to take care of general maintenance stuff. These volunteers may be called every couple of months, and can let us know if they would like to do more.
- If some volunteers have a special heart for maintenance, we may call them more often. We try to bring together people with similar interests to form teams, such as a painting crew that might paint a section of the hallway in the Children’s Wing each month.
- We also have room for people who find so much fellowship in working with their hands that they want to make this their primary means of small-group involvement. Groups like this meet every week or two and have social and devotional times in addition to their work times.
